The Roman Files is an investigation into the parts of Roman history that don't quite add up. Rome kept excellent records, which is exactly what makes the gaps interesting.

I'm J E Cowie. No ancient history degree, no dig site, just a willingness to read the primary source instead of the plaque next to it.

Each case file takes one claim, sets out the evidence on both sides and reaches a verdict. The rule: real, publicly sourced material for anything that counts as evidence, and reconstruction only where nothing can be photographed, labelled as such. If a claim can't be backed with a source, it doesn't go in the file.

The first case file lands soon. News pieces land in between. More soon.
